Labor Day Sunday 2012
DO THE WORD
A Labor Day Reflection from Craig Myrbo,
a Christian Labor Activist.

One of the readings in the Revised Common Lectionary for September 2, 2012 is James 1:17-27.
Don't just hear the word, do the word, (22)
True religion is this: caring for the widows and orphans, (27)
I became a labor activist because I realized that one way of "Caring for the widows and orphans" (the vulnerable) is through collectively bargaining and representing them. That is a way for me to "Do the word".
Adequate pensions, health insurance, sick leave, funeral leave and workers' compensation are ways of "caring for the widows and orphans". All those are benefits achieved through collective bargaining.
September 3, 2012 is a day set aside to celebrate workers and their unions.
