John Wesley made good use of verse 9 as he summed up his sermon, Of the Church:

In the mean time, let all those who are real members of the Church, see that they walk holy and unblamable in all things. “Ye are the light of the world!” Ye are “a city set upon a hill,” and “cannot be hid.” O “let your light shine before men!” Show them your faith by your works. Let them see, by the whole tenor of your conversation, that your hope is all laid up above! Let all your words and actions evidence the spirit whereby you are animated! Above all things, let your love abound. Let it extend to every child. Of man: Let it overflow to every child of God. By this let All men know whose disciples ye are, because you “love one another.”

So how is the church you are a part of doing with abounding love extended to every child? This is more than just the children who currently attend church. This is more than just the children in your neighborhood. This is an universal Advent question - are they swaddled and gifted as a Child of G*D?

Are they in worship?
Do they have health care coverage?
Is it three-strikes and you’re out?
Are both pre- and post-gay conscious loved?
Are their schools safe and pro-imagination?
How many guns will they face in their life?
Are they taught to shout another down or reason with
    them?
Will they be a migrant, an immigrant?
Will they write and sing and draw or just compete in
    sports?
How many jail cells and bombers will be built before a
    classroom?
How stable is their confidence there will be a home to go
    to?

Is there something too radical for your church to do for children? If so, do you still claim you are in the United Methodist tradition?
