From Why Me? to Why Not? But you, O Bethlehem, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come one who is to rule… - Micah 5:2 Think of the times in your life when you have felt insignificant. Unimportant. Helpless to change life’s circumstances. Has it been in the face of personal challengesdiscouragement, loss, disappointment? Has it been as you moved out into your community, among your neighbors & your friends, seeing lives gone astray? Has it been as you read & heard the news each day & saw the world on the brink? In this time of quiet, take a moment to recall when you felt small & helpless. One of the themes for this week’s readings is feeling small in the face of life’s challenges. It’s how Mary must have felt when God gave her an impossible task. It’s how the hearers of Luke’s words must have felt, the underprivileged, the sick, the minorities to whom he wrote. It’s how the people Micah addressed, “one of the little clans,” must have felt when they heard his promises. Read Micah 5:2-3 and begin to imagine how you might receive these words. Prayer: Shelter of the Small and Weak, help me not be paralyzed by my sense of helplessness. Amen. - Judy Lyons All contents copyright 2006 by the Wisconsin Chapter of the Methodist Federation for Social Action.
