From Why Me? to Why Not? God has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly. Luke 1:52 Read Luke 1:46-55. Here Luke’s message really shines through this song. Mary speaks the words of hope to us just as Luke did to those of his day who were on the fringes, who were disenfranchised, who felt powerless to bring change. Even the ‘lowly’ have a place and a role. I thought of this promise of strength to bring change one day when our daughter saw young migrant workers walking to work in the already hot sun. As she got in the car to go give them a ride, she hoped out loud that their employers weren’t taking advantage of them as strangers in our country. There are ways each of us can live differently, even if they are not as dramatic as Mary’s eventual role. God’s promise has been consistent over time: Pay attention to My vision for the world and I will be with you. Prayer: Creator of this life, help me see beyond my discouragement to your vision. Amen. - Judy All contents copyright 2006 by the Wisconsin Chapter of the Methodist Federation for Social Action.
