Advent / Christmas Meditations 2006-07

Faithfulness:  Consider Hannah

Read: I Samuel 2: 18-20, 26.

Focus: His mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year, when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. -  I Samuel 2: 19

Consider: It is cute to think of Hannah securing Samuel a little outfit to wear each year for the big trip. Many mothers do the same for their children. Mine did. Such action gives witness to love for the child and a sense of responsibility in acts of faithfulness.

The scriptures this week are reminding us of historical faithfulness. By inference, we might figure that we are called to the same faithfulness. As we travel back and forth to Jerusalem and the heavens, we might put ourselves into each passage. I do.

We just saw that God put self into our story by showing up in human form. God’s action was a bit more complex than Hannah’s little sewing project. But the meaning seems just as real.

Pray:   Present God of faithfulness, enable us to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts, to which indeed we are called in the one body. And be thankful.
