Daily Devotional
Lent 2001

Nay, rather, "rejoice and be exceeding glad," when men persecute you for his sake; when they persecute you by reviling you, and by "saying all manner of evil against you falsely:" which they will not fail to mix with every kind of persecution: They must blacken you to excuse themselves: "For so persecuted they the Prophets which were before you!"- those who were most eminently holy in heart and life, yea, and all the righteous which ever have been from the beginning of the world. Rejoice, because by this mark also ye know unto whom ye belong; and "because great is your reward in heaven,"- the reward purchased by the blood of the covenant, and freely bestowed in proportion to your sufferings, as well as to your holiness of heart and life. "Be exceedingly glad;" knowing that these "light afflictions, which are but for a moment, work out for you a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." John Wesley's Sermon 23.

Wisconsin United Methodist Federation for Social Action will use A Wesleyan Spiritual Reader by Rueben P. Job as a common daily devotional during Lent 2001. It is commended to members of the Chapter and others seeking to discover what we can learn from John Wesley that will help to better know and serve God in Christ. Bishop Job's book was published by Abingdon Press in 1998, and is available from Cokesbury for $12.00. It may be ordered on line (http://www.cokesbury.com/). Credit cards and Cokesbury account numbers are both accepted.

Do continue your devotional reading. We pray it will contain encouragement for both "works of piety" and "works of mercy."

Thank you to Steve Zekoff for designing this reading program for WUMFSA.

We expect to again bring you an Advent devotional later in the year.
