Worshipping God…Just for Us or for Justice
January 22 - 23, 2010
Pine Lake Camp
Westfield, Wisconsin

Do you enjoy the style of music used in contemporary worship service, but find the lyrics not always reflecting the depth of the Gospel's call to live a faith life marked by a commitment to social justice?  Looking for some good resources to incorporate into contemporary or blended style worship?  Just want to enjoy some good worship, singing, and supportive fellowship with others who have a commitment to justice ministries?

Mark January 22 - 23 on your calendar.  Our Wisconsin United Methodist Federation for Social Action chapter is sponsoring a retreat and workshop at Pine Lake Camp on the theme “Worshipping God…Just for Us or for Justice.” Friday night we will focus on the role of worship in the faith community. Saturday morning we will address characteristics of contemporary worship and then look specifically at United Methodist music resources followed by other music publishers’ materials. A good deal of the time will be spent singing interspersed among the various topics of discussion, but you don't have to be a polished singer or musician to participate.

The event will start at 7 pm on Friday night, and will conclude with lunch on Saturday.

Our workshop leader will be Phil Carver.

Phil began writing music about faith and justice while interpreting the work of urban ministries of The United Methodist Church in Des Moines, Iowa. As the Justice Troubadour, he traveled throughout the state and the Midwest to strengthen support for these programs that responded to the basic human needs of persons living on the edge of society.

Currently, Phil is a Field Outreach Minister on the staff of the Iowa Annual Conference of  The United Methodist Church. His primary responsibility is to assist local churches in their outreach to the community. Phil serves more than 100 churches in the Southeast District of Iowa. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in music education from Cornell College and a Master of Music degree in composition from the University of Northern Iowa.

For more information about Phil and his JUSTICEpraise ministry web site dedicated to music for worship in a contemporary style with themes of God's justice, featuring music he's written: http://www.justicepraise.net/index.html

We will be using the Rader Retreat Center at Pine Lake Camp, which accommodates two persons per room in hotel style rooms, with the program in the Oakwood Center.

A 0.5 CEU credit is available for those who participate in the entire event.

Registration forms and costs will be available later this spring.  For more information, contact Steve Zekoff.
