As new sessions of Congress and the Wisconsin Legislature begin following a bitterly divisive season of campaigns and elections, we have an opportunity to take stock of how we can help our state and nation move forward in a more positive direction.  Together, we will develop our understanding and skills to address key questions for the church’s public witness: In an increasingly polarized and toxic political atmosphere, how can we be faithful advocates for the common good?  What can we do to help create a more civil environment in which we can work together to address the serious challenges that confront our communities and the wider society? How can we effectively work with elected leaders on both sides of the aisle to advance constructive public?

This February 8 – 9, 2013 WUMFSA-sponsored retreat at the Rader Retreat Center of Pine Lake Camp will help participants develop understandings and skills to maintain an effective public witness in the midst of divisive times.

 

Peter Bakken, Coordinator for Public Policy at the Wisconsin Council of Churches and Executive Director of Wisconsin Interfaith Power and Light, will be leading the event.  He received his Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Chicago Divinity School.  He lives in Madison with his wife and daughter, where they are members of Advent Lutheran Church (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America). 

Cost for the retreat will be $70 per person for double accommodations (Friday night housing, Saturday breakfast and lunch), or $100 for a single room.  The event will begin at 7:00 pm on Friday, February 8 and conclude with lunch the next day.  For more information, contact Steve Zekoff (szekoff@charter.net).
